Author Guidelines

Guidelines for authors wishing to publish in ©SHILAP Revista de lepidopterología

1. SHILAP Revista de lepidopterología is an international journal published since 1973 by the Sociedad Hispano-Luso-Americana de Lepidopterología and uses the ORCID® persistent digital identifier as a way to ensure standardisation of correct authorship. It includes empirical and theoretical research articles in all areas of Lepidopterology (systematics, taxonomy, phylogeny, morphology, bionomics, ecology, faunistics and zoogeography, also bibliographical works or on the history of Lepidopterology, as well as book reviews on these topics) from all regions of the world, with special interest in studies that in one way or another have relevance to conservation biology. Each volume consists of four annual issues (one volume per year) in March, June, September and December.

2. The official languages of the journal are Spanish, English, French, German, Italian and Portuguese.

3. The manuscript must be about original research not previously published and submitted exclusively to SHILAP Revista de lepidopterología, otherwise it must be communicated urgently. The manuscript should preferably be submitted in electronic format and a Word, WordPerfect or Rich Text Format (RTF) file is preferred.

4. The Editor represents the opinion of the Editorial Board and will inform the authors of his decision on the acceptance or rejection of their papers. All manuscripts will be reviewed by the Editor and at least two independent reviewers in order to ensure the quality of the papers. The review process is fast. Based on their report, the Editor decides whether a manuscript will be accepted for publication. Accepted papers are published as quickly as possible, normally within 12 months of receipt. Once accepted, the paper becomes the property of the journal, the journal retains the copyright and no part of the paper may be reproduced without citing its source.

5. All articles must include a summary of their content in Spanish and English (Abstract) and, if necessary, another in any of the official languages of the journal. For authors who do not know Spanish, the translation of the Abstract from English to Spanish will be done by the Editor, if the paper is accepted. The abstract should be concise and condense the conclusions of the paper, and should not include full stops. Each abstract must be followed by a maximum of 10 keywords in the same language, separated by commas. The abstract in a language other than that of the text must be preceded by a translation of the title in English.

6. The order of presentation of papers will be: title, author, abstracts, text and bibliographical references. In case of doubt, please consult previous issues of the journal. Papers that do not conform to these rules or that are more than 20% plagiarised, will be returned to the authors.

7. AUTHORS: Authors must submit their full name, contact address, e-mail address and include their ID identifiers (ORCID®) in their signature. Spanish-speaking authors who use both surnames are advised to join them with a hyphen.

8. OF THE TEXT: It is recommended not to use infrapaginal calls. Dates should be written as follows: 15-VII-1985 (i.e. days and years in Arabic numerals and months in Roman numerals). Citations of the authors of the bibliography in the text should be given with the date: Linnaeus (1758), (Linnaeus, 1758) or, if pages are to be indicated, these should be placed after the year by separating them with a comma and the word "p. "(Linnaeus, 1758, p. 65); if there are three or more authors, the first one should be indicated, followed by et al. (Efetov et al. 2022). If they are different authors, they should be arranged alphabetically separated by a semicolon (Herrich-Schäffer, 1857; Linnaeus, 1758). Citations of captured material should be made as follows: Country (when necessary), province, locality, altitude, sex of specimens, date and collector. The symbol for male and female has to be coded as (&&) and (&) respectively with brackets. Diacritical characters not normally included in Western European sources (e.g. Slavic languages, Romanian, Polish, Turkish, etc.) should also be coded; the codes used should be submitted on a separate sheet with a printed version of the manuscript.

9. SPECIES AND OTHER TAXONOMIC CATEGORIES: All names of taxa mentioned in the text, both established and new taxa to be described, should conform to recent standards of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature. Latin names of genera and species should be in italics. The abbreviations gen. nov., sp. nov., syn. nov., comb. nov., or similar, should be used explicitly for all taxonomic innovations. In the description of a new genus, the nominal type species should be designated in the original combination and with reference to the original description and immediately after the new name. If new taxa are described in the article, it is essential that the types are deposited in a scientific institution. All taxa should be mentioned followed by their descriptor (with the full name) and the date of description at least once. Internationally recognised abbreviations of authors may be used: L. (Linnaeus); H.-S. (Herrich-Schäffer); Stgr. (Staudinger), etc.

10. ILLUSTRATIONS: Drawings shall be made in India ink or digital print DIN A4. Photographs with high contrast, compatible with Adobe Photoshop and in any image format such as TIFF or JPEG may be submitted. The cost of colour publications may be charged to the authors, if deemed necessary by the Director.

11. REFERENCES AND CITATIONS: All papers will be accompanied by a bibliographical reference which will include only the publications cited in the text. The references will be adapted to the APA 7th Edition, with the following format:

Journal articles:

Surname, A., Surname, B., & Surname, C. (2019). Title of the specific article. Journal Title, Volume(journal number), start page number-end page number.

If a journal article has a DOI or URL, it will be included at the end of the reference:

Bibliographic citations should be listed in alphabetical order of authors. When reference is made to more than one paper by the same author, the corresponding bibliographic citations will be listed in order of seniority of the papers.

Citations will be made with the names of the authors, the first in capital letters and the rest in lower case, as follows: (Linnaeus, 1758), Linnaeus (1758) or Linnaeus (1758, p. 65), using the latter to cite a specific page. When there are two authors, their names should be separated by & (De Prins & De Prins, 2008). The name of the first author followed by et al. should be used when there are three or more authors (Efetov et al. 2022). When references are made to more than one work by the same author, published in the same year, they should be differentiated in the text and in the bibliographic list by a lower-case letter, as indicated: Efetov (1997a, b).

12. TABLES: They will have their own correlative numbering, on independent, unpaginated sheets and, if necessary, may include an explanatory note.

13. BIBLIOGRAPHICAL NOTES AND REVIEWS: They should not exceed two pages in length and should follow the same rules as the articles.

14. PROOFS: Authors will receive proofs in PDF format in order to carefully correct printing errors. Proofs must be returned within 15 days from the date of receipt. After this time, the Editor will decide whether to delay publication or to make the corrections, declining all responsibility for the persistence of possible errors. The Editor reserves the right to make the necessary modifications to maintain the uniformity of the journal.

15. REPRINTS: Authors will receive a free PDF of their work. If you need additional offprints of your paper in hard copy, you should inform the Secretary General in advance and the cost will be borne by the author(s). Self-archiving of articles is permitted at the time of publication in the printed version.

16. CORRESPONDENCE: Correspondence will only be maintained with the first corresponding author. If the corresponding author is not the first author, this must be indicated in writing to the Secretary General.
