Abstract: This catalogue of Psychidae in China is piled based on a literature research in multiple languages and on the study of Psychidae specimens in National Zoological Museum of China and Natural History Museum in London. Prior our research, less than 20 Psychidae species are listed in China, however we expand the list to 59 species, 35 genera and 7 subfamilies, among them, two species are newly recorded in China.

Keywords: Lepidoptera, Tineoidea, catalogue, China.

Introduction

Psychidae belong to the Lepidoptera family, there are 1,324 species distributed on all continents except Antarctica ( Sobczyk, 2011). Many members in this family are polyphagous, which means they are able to feed on a variety of different plants. All bagworms bear a self-made case, these cases can be made from different materials like moss, leaves, twigs, silk, or debris ( Rhainds et al., 2009). The adult males usually have a fuscous appearance, their thoraxes can be furry, and their wings can have transparent areas that have no scales on it. Male adults nearly always rest in still, but when they take off, their flight pattern is similar to hummingbirds or clearwing moths. Most female bagworm adults are wingless or even legless, they pupae in the case, mate in the case, lay eggs in the case and even die in the case ( Davis, 1964). Psychids caterpillars are quite difficult to rear, their larval stages are much longer than other moths and their cases make them susceptible to fungi infection in artificial environment. Add to the fact that the adult males are short lived and difficult to collect via light-trap, these situations made the Psychidae family poorly studied. In China, the Psychidae family is also poorly studied, most of the literatures on Chinese Psychidae are in other languages, systematic research on this family had never been conducted before, thus no catalogues on Chinese Psychidae have ever been made. In order to fill this gap, we conducted a literature survey and studied the Psychidae collections in National Zoological Museum of China and Natural History Museum in London to generate this catalogue of 59 species in 35 genera of Psychidae in China, among them, Metisa atra Joannis, 1929 and Pteroma pendula (Joannis, 1929) are newly recorded to China. The valid taxa are all listed in an alphabetical order under their subfamilies. The references for each species and known synonyms are given. The distribution of each species is also provided.
