El día 29 de julio de 2022, a la edad de 91 años, murió nuestro Socio de Honor Barry Goater, que lo fue de nuestra Sociedad.

Nació el 14 de agosto de 1930 en Southampton, Hampshire, Reino Unido y asistió a la Peter Symonds School de Winchester (1939-49), de donde salió para estudiar Botánica en el University College de Southampton (1949-52).

Desde pequeño, ya tenía un ferviente interés por el estudio de los Lepidoptera, pues había sido una afición familiar compartida con su querido abuelo, que permitía al joven Barry acompañarle a recoger especímenes.

Al dejar Southampton en 1952, pasó dos años en la Real Fuerza Aérea completando su Servicio Nacional y mientras estaba allí en 1954 tuvo el honor de ser el poseedor del récord de 880 yardas del Cuerpo, podría decir “media milla”, ya que así es como siempre lo describía, poseedor del récord de carrera y campeón.

Poco después, el director de Habs, Tom Taylor, le nombró profesor de Biología, el primero de sus muchos cargos en Haberdashers (1954-1988). En cuatro años fue nombrado Jefe de Departamento, al tiempo que sustituía a Geoff Hickman como maestro encargado del campo a través. La Copa Goater, la principal carrera intercolegial de campo a través, que se celebró por primera vez en. Pasó 21 años como oficial superior en la sección de la RAF de la Escuela y creó la Sociedad Ornitológica de la Escuela, llevando a los chicos y al personal a reservas naturales y lugares salvajes de todo el país en busca de aves raras y a veces exóticas.

En 1988, Barry se jubiló anticipadamente, después de haber pasado 102 trimestres en Haberdashers. Pero esta jubilación anticipada no fue para que Barry pudiera mejorar su hándicap de golf o interesarse académicamente, sino para que pudiera dedicar tiempo al estudio de los Lepidoptera europeos, viajando por Portugal, Laponia, la República Checa y Bulgaria, pero sobre todo por España y Francia.

En 1989 fue nombrado “Freeman of the City of London the Haberdashers Company” y, a partir de 1992, “Visiting Fellow” en la Universidad de Southampton. Fue Presidente de la Sociedad Británica de Entomología e Historia Natural y, tras escribir y ser coautor de casi un centenar de artículos científicos sobre los Lepidoptera, fue galardonado con el premio “Butterfly Conservation Marsh” en 2005 por sus servicios a la conservación de los Lepidoptera.

En los primeros años (1955-1962) de su estancia en la escuela, llevó a grupos de chicos de Habs a la zona de Beaulieu Road Station, en New Forest, para trabajar en proyectos de investigación biológica. Los chicos escribían los informes detallados, llamados “Los tomos de Beaulieu”, que Barry guardaba y que se han archivado recientemente en la Oficina de Registros de Hampshire, en Winchester. En los Tomos de Barry se recogen los detalles fácticos de estos proyectos, que abarcan desde todos los chicos presentes hasta la flora, la distribución de las aves, las mariposas, las polillas, los tritones, las sanguijuelas y las briofitas (musgos y hepáticas). Desde entonces, Barry ha sido aclamado como la primera persona que introdujo el trabajo de campo biológico en el plan de estudios nacional, además de ser la inspiración para las carreras de muchos en la conservación de la naturaleza, la ecología y las preocupaciones medioambientales. Este entusiasmo contagioso también arrastró a muchos estudiantes que inicialmente no tenían gran interés por las cosas científicas o el mundo natural.

Perteneció a las Sociedades científicas: Botanical Society of the British Isles (1960); British Bryological Society (1961); British Entomological & Natural History Society, (1954) (Socio de Honor y Presidente); Societas Europaea Lepidopterologica (1983) (Socio de Honor y Vicepresidente). Sociedad Hispano-Luso-Americana de Lepidopterología (1991) (Socio de Honor).

Fue Director o Miembro del Consejo Editorial de: British Journal of Entomology & Natural History, Entomologist’s Gazette, Entomologist’s Record, Phegea (Bélgica), Esperiana (Alemania), Noctuidae Europaeae (Dinamarca), SHILAP Revista de Lepidopterología (España).
